Overview of ACT Workshop

The title of this workshop is Affect Centered Therapy for Ingestive Disorders. The ingestive disorders are characterized by abuse of a substance, which may be alcohol, an illegal or legal drug, cigarettes, or food. The abused substance is referred to as a traumaphor, because its use suggests similarities with childhood adversity or trauma. Using the traumaphor provides for regulation of current emotions that would otherwise overwhelm the user, reenactment of archaic trauma or adversity, and reexperiencing of unresolved emotions assembled with the trauma. Prior registration in the Tools for Emotion Regulation workshop is a prerequisite for the ACT workshop.

The objectives of ACT for ingestive disorders are to uncover and resolve the deficit, adversity, and trauma that have conditioned the emergence of the disorder; to facilitate the emergence of a more adaptive self structure; and to integrate the new self structure into a relapse prevention orientation. These goals are achieved through the techniques of Traumaphor Associations, Traumaphor Focused Processing, and Relapse Prevention.
